The Finest Edge of Twilight by R. A. Salvatore is the newest chapter in the legendary Drizzt Do’Urden saga, and if you haven’t read his Drow adventures in the Forgotten Realms yet, I really envy you. If you were to start reading them now, you would have a treasure trove of about fifty books to dive into. OG fans would love to relive the thrills of reading The Crystal Shard, the first Drizzt novel, and they envy new fans who are about to dive into those captivating adventures for the first time.
Is The Finest Edge of Twilight a “Passing of the Torch” Story?
No, The Finest Edge of Twilight is not a direct “passing of the torch” story, even though it heavily features Drizzt’s daughter, Breezy. We’ve seen so many pop culture icons pass on the torch over the past few years (Luke Skywalker, Indiana Jones, etc.), and I am not ready to see Drizzt do the same. Luckily, Drizzt is an elf in the magical world of the Forgotten Realms. Elves live for many centuries, and I have a feeling that Drizzt will be around for a while longer.
Some might think his mighty scimitars, Twinkle and Icingdeath, have rusted over, or that his astral panther companion, Guenhwyvar, passed away long ago. But no! This is fantasy where these terrible things don’t happen (too often). It’s been over 40 years, yet these characters are still kicking around. The passing of the torch can wait.
Is Breezy the Main Character?
While Breezy serves as the primary protagonist of this book, The Finest Edge of Twilight truly functions as an ensemble piece. Drizzt is not the only Companion of the Hall making an
appearance here. Other fan favorites play important roles, including Wulfgar, Regis, Catti-brie, and Bruenor. Jarlaxle, everyone’s favorite dark elf bad boy, is also omnipresent, and an old frenemy makes a compelling comeback. There’s something almost soapish (in a good way) about this cast; no matter how long they’ve been around, you just can’t wait to find out what they’re up to next.
Will There Be More Drizzt Novels?
Yes, given the enduring popularity of the Forgotten Realms series, it is highly likely there will be more Drizzt novels after The Finest Edge of Twilight. The late ’80s and early ’90s saw the release of hundreds of these novels, with The Crystal Shard opening the way to that Legendary Era. Even when publishers almost completely stopped putting out other tie-in novels, they continued the Drizzt books. That alone speaks volumes about Drizzt’s relevance. Like The Wheel of Time, The Shannara Chronicles, The Dresden Files, and the Dune books, Drizzt’s adventures have enjoyed a long life, but unlike some extended series, it is hard to find fans who feel the narrative here has been stretched too thin.
Who Is the Villain in The Finest Edge of Twilight?
Dahlia Sin’felle, one of the most complex characters in the series, returns to serve as a central antagonistic force in the opening pages. The Finest Edge of Twilight grabs you immediately with this old foe. It doesn’t matter how you feel about Dahlia, or how much of a horrible person she is; her story arc is brilliantly nuanced. We saw her evolve over several books, from a
companion and lover to an enemy, and finally a frenemy, spanning from Gauntlgrym through the Generations trilogy (Timeless, Boundless, and Relentless). She also starred in the Neverwinter Tales graphic novel. She is a massive reason this story hooks you right from the start.
Is The Finest Edge of Twilight a Page-Turner?
Absolutely; R. A. Salvatore’s signature pacing makes this nearly 400-page book an immediate page-turner. A couple of pages into the prologue, I caught myself flipping to the back—not to read the ending, but to calculate exactly how much trouble I would get into with work if I read the whole thing in one sitting. Salvatore has a gift for grabbing your attention and refusing to let go until the final page.
Cracking the cover open feels a lot like reading The Crystal Shard all over again; it is an old favorite, but entirely new.
Who is Breezy Do’Urden?
Breezynnelle “Breezy” Do’Urden is the daughter of Drizzt and Catti-brie, a highly skilled young woman struggling to escape the massive shadows of her legendary parents. She is a grown adult by human standards, but because she is part elf and part human with a lifespan of hundreds of years, she still operates with the headstrong energy of a contemporary teenager. Her frustration is palpable every time someone mentions her famous progenitors, making this an incredibly relatable coming-of-age story wrapped in high fantasy.
Is Breezy a Strong Female Character?
Yes, Breezy is a fantastic, strong female character precisely because she is allowed to be flawed, vulnerable, and make mistakes. She completely avoids the tired, generic “strong female character” trend. While she is a formidable martial artist capable of besting larger foes, she still experiences the humiliation of defeat. How she bounces back and evolves is what sets her apart from cookie-cutter heroines. Salvatore excels at crafting captivating development arcs, and Breezy is his latest triumph.
Does The Finest Edge of Twilight End on a Cliffhanger?
This is the first entry into a new series, yet it stands on its own. It does leave you wanting more. I once asked Salvatore how much longer he planned on writing Drizzt novels. He replied
that he would write them as long as there was a demand for them. Since then, Salvatore has published several more Drizzt novels, including the Way of the Drow trilogy (Starlight Enclave, Glacier’s Edge and Lolth’s Warrior). I don’t know what his plans are for the next books in the series, but I think there will definitely be more.
Which Drizzt Book Should You Read First?
New readers can confidently use The Finest Edge of Twilight as a starting point, though purists can always begin with original classics like The Crystal Shard or Homeland. Because this novel kicks off a brand new arc centered around Breezy, it serves as a fantastic entry point that will undoubtedly whet your appetite to go back and explore the rest of the legendary catalog.
